Members Area IIS Setup

Introduction    Procedure    Additional Configuration Concerns

IntroductionTop of Page

This document assumes that you already have an existing website, and that all D.N.S setup is complete, and that Asp.Net 1.x is installed and configured on your Windows server.

The purpose of this document is to explain the IIS and security configuration options necessary to successfully run the Members Only Area Asp.Net application created by Diverse Network Associates.

ProcedureTop of Page

1. Open your Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. It can be found at:
Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
Or
Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

2. Navigate to the Web Sites directory (by expanding the target computer icon)

3. Select the web site that contains the Members Only Area application. If the directory that will contain the Members Only Area application doesn't exist, create it through windows.

4. Right click on the directory that contains the Members Only Area application and select "Properties".

5. If the directory doesn't yet have an application associated with it, click on the "Create" button located in the "Application Settings" section under the "Directory" tab, as shown in the figure below.

6. Once the directory has been given an application point click on the "Configuration" button.

7. Click on the "Insert" button in the "Wildcard application maps" section of the "Mappings" tab.

8. Click on the "Browse" button.

9. Select the executable the runs the Asp.Net application. This is normally the "aspnet_isapi.dll" and can normally be found in the following directory: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322.

Note: This executable can be double checked by checking what executable is set for the ".aspx" application extention located in the "Application extensions" section in the "Mappings" tab on the previous screen.

10. Once selected make sure to un-check the "Verify that file exists" checkbox, and then click the "OK" button.

11. Click on the "OK" button to save all changes made.

12. The configuration is complete. The "Wildcard application maps" is added so that the ".html" pages that are contained in the area that is protected by the application will run through the Asp.Net application and the security settings set in the "Web.config" file will apply to the ".html" files and the user will be forced to enter a username/password to log in.

Additional Configuration ConcernsTop of Page

1. Contained within the installation directory for the Members Only Area application there will be a "__database" and a "logs" directory. The "__database" directory contains the access database that runs the application. The "logs" directory contains the error log for the application. The user that the Asp.Net application runs as needs write access to these directories. This user is usually the "Network Services" user, but you will need to check your installation to be sure. This can normally be found in the "Application Pools" section in the IIS Manager.
